Since the templates are designed for Max1, I'm going to try modifying them in Max1, and then loading movies created in Max2 into what I have modified in Max1. The ONLY reason I am using Max2 is so that I can selectively highlight text with color, bold, etc.
Would this work? (I'm going to try--getting all frustrated in my efforts so far).

...if you convert the template to SM2, you have to convert all sections and export the swf's into a new "UPLOAD" folder - I don't know about using the "selectively highlight text with color, bold, etc" - I have not tried this my self, but it's possible that it will not work as you might have to change the text to a "Device" font and "Device" fonts can not be masked and/or effects applied to - and the template is using text masks and effects.

This strategy is working great! The animations are functioning correctly, and everything seems to be fine! Maybe I am in for some surprises down the road here in a bit.

I forgot to mention in my last post--I didn't convert the templates to SM2. I just did all of my modifications (menu titles, info text, etc.) using SM1. Then, I called movies developed in SM2 (so that I could use selective text formatting) into SM1. Everything seems to be going fine!
