Hi,

I am evaluating Sorenson and SWISHVIDEO. In Sorenson it is possible to deinterlace the picture which improves the picture.

Is it possible to do this in SWISHVIDEO?

Thanks

Hmm, no. Some DV filters already do that. Are you referring to DV actually?

Hi,

The source is DV footage. It might not be the "deinterlacing" option inside Sorenson. I am not sure. But the video test from Sorenson has less pixelization when the subject moves.

I have included two files to illustrat what I am talking about. Both were encoded at aprox 1MBits/sec. The SWISH version was encoded at "50%", the Sorenson at "480x320".

Let me know what you think.

Thanks,

Phil

p.s. Because of space limitations, I will attach the Sorenson sample in the next post.

Here is the Sorenson example.

Also, do know where I could download the SWISH video player used in the example by itself?

Thanks

The two files are very different (brightness is different, sizes are different).

Any chance to get a link to the original DV? Thank you.

Sure, If that would help. I don't know why the file sizes are so different. In Swishvideo it was encoded at one of the presets aprox 850 kbts. In Sorenson at aprox 1000 kbts.

This is odd, because the Sorenson was encoded at a higher bit rate. The audio was encoded at about the same in both. Yet Sorenson's file is much smaller.

The problem with sending the orginal file is that it is an .avi thus quite large; to large to attach.

If you wanted to try your own experiment you could download the trial version of Sorenson at
www.sorenson.com (Sorenson Squeeze 4) and test it on any .avi file.

I am trying both products and would prefer to buy Swishvideo, For one thing I like the players that come with Swishvideo. But at this point, it appears that Sorenson produces better looking video at a smaller size. However, the audio sounds slightly better in Swishvideo.

I hope I can be proven wrong.

Thanks

Aaahh I know! The 50% scale down factor is NOT for the video it is for the Flash zoom factor.

So the image was still encoded in 720x480, certainly the worst case ever :)
Especially at this frame rate (30fps).

SWiSHvideo 2 will have a better approach of this. The zoom factor is just confusing.

Anyway, try with the Coarse Grain option on, with the 50% factor and you should get a better result. Much better.

The file you've attached SWISH.swf has actually a bitrate of 2500 kbps, which means that SV could not compress with keeping the specified bitrate.
The Sorenson file (and yes I know Sorenson product :)) has a bitrate of 1269 kbps, I'm not surprised, they always encode at a higher bitrate than specified.

Always keep in mind that bitrate = 'filesize in bytes' * 8 / movie duration in seconds. Divide the result by 1000 to get the kbps. This applies for any kind of file of course (MP3, MPEG etc etc).

Regards

-Olivier
